HIS Dance Ensemble presents RED
"Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path." Psalm 119:105
A lost girl, a devious wolf, and a path that leads in the wrong direction…who will save Red?
HIS Dance Ensemble presents RED, a contemporary ballet based on the classic tale “Little Red Riding Hood,” written by Tassia Johnson, Hannah Sullivan, and Sarah Powell. Spiritual allegory is woven throughout this well-loved story to create a fresh, new theatrical experience. RED will be performed on March 14 at 1 & 4:30 pm at DeVos Center for Arts & Worship at Grand Rapids Christian High School, 2300 Plymouth Road SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49506.
"We want this story to engage audiences because it’s familiar and then surprise them as we elaborate on untold parts of this well-known fairy tale. We aim to draw the hearts of each person into a world filled with despair and a conclusion of redemption and hope," Hannah Sullivan explains.
As the character Red travels into the woods to fulfill her mother's request, she becomes quickly distracted by the beauty surrounding her. “RED, the ballet, is like a live movie experience,” said Artistic Director Tassia Johnson. “Red, who is lighthearted but must do as her mother asks, is thrust into a journey of wonder and adventure.”
The HIS Dance Ensemble is directed by Tassia Johnson, Mary Jo Priest, and Emma Longworth and includes 73 local students ages 8-18. Guest artists Darrell Haggard and Wolfgang Goluska join the Ensemble for RED and will be dancing the parts of the Wolf and Huntsman.
Inspired by RED’s fairy tale roots, the Ensemble has decided to use the ballet to bring attention to those who do not have access to education. Funds raised during the performance will go towards The Amar Project, which aims to rebuild schools in Syria that were destroyed by ISIS. Anyone who makes a donation to The Amar Project may have their photo taken with Red and her friends after the 4:30 pm performance.
We thank our Grand Plie` sponsors for supporting RED: Beacon Hill at Eastgate, Bredeweg & Zylstra and Veurinks RV Center
